Llanfihangel y Pennant Community Council

Welcome to Llanfihangel y Pennant

Community Council website

This is a beautiful area in the south west of Meirionnydd, with a wealth of history and heritage. It stretches from Bwlch Talyllyn to Dolgoch, and from the Cwm Llanfihangel y Pennant to Craig yr Aderyn. It includes Llyn Talyllyn (Llyn Mwyngil), and also Cartref Mari Jones, which is Ty'n Ddol (home of Mary Jones) It was from here, in 1800, that as a young girl of 16 she walked all the way to Bala to buy a bible from Thomas Charles, and this was the inspiration to establish the Bible Society in 1804. It also includes Castell y Bere, which was built by Llywelyn the Great in 1221, which is an example of medieval Welsh engineering. The area of the Community Council is sparsely populated. The largest number live in Abergynolwyn, - a village that came into existence following the opening of the Bryneglwys Slate Quarry in 1844. Investment was made in technology and a railway was built. Traces of the quarry can be seen on the landscape, and on the community as a whole. Such is the influence that the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. Today, agriculture and tourism are the main employers within the community, with the Talyllyn Railway being extremely popular. It is an area worth visiting.
